A locksmith business built on doing the ordinary things properly: turn up, look at the door, explain the options, and get on with it.
Good On Ya Locksmith Hawthorn works on locks, keys, doors and door hardware for properties around Hawthorn and the surrounding eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Homes, apartments, townhouses, offices, shops — the door does not much care what is behind it.
The name is meant to say something about how we work. “Good on ya” is what you say to someone who has done the right thing without making a production of it. That is the standard we are aiming at: friendly, competent, no fuss.
In practice that means a few specific commitments. We look at a door before quoting on it. We tell you when replacing hardware makes more sense than repairing it, even when the repair would be the easier sale. We do not tell people their property is unsafe to sell them a lock. And when something is outside what we do, we say so rather than have a go and hope.
We are based at 692 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn VIC 3122, which means Hawthorn is not a service area on a map for us — it is the street we work on.

The kind of doors around here
Hawthorn and the suburbs around it are not a uniform housing stock, and that changes the work. A Federation or Edwardian home on a street off Glenferrie Rd often still has its original timber front door, sometimes with a mortice lock that is older than anyone living there. Those doors move with the weather. A door that binds every winter and frees up in summer is usually a frame and alignment problem being blamed on the lock.
Then there are the newer apartment buildings along the main roads and near the station, where the front door is part of a building-wide system. Changing one of those is not a matter of picking a lock off a shelf — it has to keep working with the common-property keying, and that usually means talking to the owners corporation before anything is touched.
In between sit the renovated terraces and townhouses, where the front door is often a heavy modern slab with a multipoint lock, and the back or garage door is whatever was cheapest at the time. The weak point in a house is almost never the door people worry about.
None of that is exotic knowledge. It just means that when we ask what the door is made of and when the problem started, we are narrowing it down rather than making conversation.
How we quote
We do not give a firm price for lock work over the phone, because a price given before seeing the door is a guess dressed up as a quote. What we can do on the phone is tell you the likely range, what would push it to the higher end, and whether it sounds like something that needs doing today or can wait until it suits you.
Once we have looked at the door you get the actual figure and the reason for it before any work starts. If we find something extra once we are into the job, we stop and tell you rather than adding it to the invoice.
